Clean TeQ Wins Water Award

Dandenong based Clean TeQ has been presented with a major award at the 2007 Water Awards held in Perth on October 11.

The Awards are a joint initiative between the Department of Water and the Water Corporation aimed at encouraging more efficient use of water.

Acting Director General of the Department of Water Rob Hammond said the Water Recycling Award for a Small Organisation, Community or Individual Project recognised the significant contribution by CleanTeQ through its Clean-iX water recycling pilot plant.

“One of many projects supported by the Premier’s Water Foundation, Clean-iX is a revolutionary new ion exchange technology platform that promises an exciting new cost and energy effective option for water purification,” Mr Hammond said.

The trial results have suggested that Clean-iX can provide recycled water at similar cost to current methods of recycled water treatment, but at a far lower capital cost. It also recovers more water and only uses 20 percent of the energy.

The potential applications for Clean-iX include water reuse for industry and groundwater replenishment. Because of Clean iX’s flexibility and low energy requirement it is also a possible treatment option for removal of impurities from water supplies across the State.

There were a total of 15 categories in the Awards, including Waterwise Business, Waterwise School, Water Innovation and Management of Water Resources.

Entrants ranged from individuals, small businesses, schools, corporations and local governments.

“The high standard of all the entries is a reassuring sign that West Australian’s understand the true value of water and are aware of the critical need for community action,” Mr Hammond said.

Other award recipients included:

  • Satterley Property Group received the Award for Excellence for The Green at Brighton, a residential estate which involves a comprehensive water efficiency strategy making it one of the most sustainable communities in Australia.

  • Rio Tinto Iron Ore and MWH Australia took out the Management of Water Resources Award for a Commercial Project for its innovative aquifer re-injection scheme at Rio Tinto’s Yandicoogina Junction South East pit. The project re-injects approximately 16.5 million litres of excess water back into aquifers for storage per day.

  • Alcoa World Alumina won the Water Recycling Award for a Commercial Project for its water management strategy at the McCoy Crusher Site which focuses on maximising the harvesting and recycling of water onsite. Since being fully commissioned in January 2005 over 400ML of water has been harvested and recycled on site.
